Since 1954
Our History
The Amherst Lions Club was chartered in 1954, sponsored by the Truro Lions Club. Twenty-four members signed the new club's charter, and the inaugural event was held at the Fort Cumberland Hotel, attended by a representative of Lions Clubs International.
Our Mission
Since 1954, the Amherst Lions Club has served Amherst through volunteerism and giving. We support the CNIB and those with vision loss, fund local health care and the YMCA, sponsor Little League and youth sports, maintain Lions Park, and back seniors and community causes — powered by decades of fundraising, from bingo to BBQs. Guided by "service before self," we meet our community's needs today and invest in its future.
What We Stand For
Sight & the CNIB
Right from the beginning, the club has been involved in projects with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) — funding talking books, guide dogs, eyeglasses for those in need, and library equipment.
Seniors & Community Health
The club has long supported seniors, individuals with intellectual disabilities, and the Diabetic Society, alongside major local healthcare investments.
Youth & Recreation
Sponsoring Little League Baseball since 1954, the club maintains the Lion Cecil Small Ball Field and Lions Park Playground, and supports minor hockey, soccer, figure skating, basketball, and boxing.
Fundraising
TV Bingo has run since 1972, with regular weekly bingo since 1984 — proceeds fund community initiatives through the Lions Community Centre.
